Have you heard of kratom?
Kratom is purchased by individuals who can purchase online or locally in retail shops. These retailers buy kratom in bulk to distribute to their customers. Which means they have to store it before it hits the shelves.
This begs the question: what is the shelf life for kratom? How long will it last?
You may also be asking this if you’re the owner of a shop and are looking to buy kratom wholesale.
Either way, we’ve got you covered. Let’s get to it.
Forms of Kratom
If you’ve been with us for a while, you are probably familiar with the different forms of kratom. But, for the newcomers, let’s just briefly go over the forms kratom is available in, and how it is typically seen.
Kratom typically comes in powdered form. According to experts, this is the most popular way it is brought to the market.
As we said earlier, buying in bulk presents the problem of storage/preservation for retailers. Since kratom is plant-based, care needs to be taken to make sure that it doesn’t spoil. Retailers also need to be aware of how long they’ve had particular batches of kratom in their inventory because of the plant’s shelf life.
Shelf Life for Kratom
Like anything else, kratom has a perishable shelf life. If a retailer is storing it in a stock room, knowing the shelf life for kratom becomes important. Since it’s a naturally occurring product, retailers who may be buying it wholesale are mindful of its shelf life and how much they keep on-hand.
Depending on how often a retailer sells kratom, they may not have to worry too much about how long it keeps. According to experts, however, the typical shelf life for kratom is 1-3 months.
If a retailer orders kratom online, they may want to look at their kratom vendor’s shipping practices. Since kratom is a pure, fresh, natural product, it should be shipped promptly and efficiently to ensure freshness.
This shouldn’t be a problem for a reputable kratom wholesaler. However, some vendors will delay in shipping the product. When it arrives, the product may look faded, degraded, and “stale” in a way. Doing a little research into your vendor’s shipping process before you buy can help to avoid all of this.
Storage
Take care to store kratom in the proper place. The area it’s stored in should have a controlled temperate and shouldn’t get too hot.
Kratom should also be stored in an airtight container. Exposure to oxygen will cause kratom to degrade rapidly due to the alkaloids in the leaves.
The perfect solution to this is to store kratom in either a Ziploc bag or an airtight container like Tupperware.
In addition to temperature and oxygen, the moisture of the storage area needs to be considered. Kratom, when exposed to moisture, can get moldy. That’s a bad sign.
The area where the kratom powder is being stored should be free of moisture. If kratom powder gets moldy, the whole amount should be thrown out. There is no reason to take a chance of mold contamination, especially when the kratom powder is being sold.
Finally, the storage area needs to be dark. Exposure to light can damage kratom just as much as exposure to moisture. Exposure to strong UV radiation will start to degrade the leaves of your kratom and cause it to spoil, and drastically reduce the shelf life for kratom.
It’s also important to note that just because the sun isn’t out doesn’t mean kratom isn’t being exposed to UV rays. UV rays can transmit through clouds, so retailers need to be mindful of where kratom is stored.
Fresh or Stale Kratom
When kratom leaves start to look pale, lose their scent, or lose freshness, these are good signs that the plant has most likely spoiled. If, after checking these things, it’s still uncertain, it may make sense for a retailer to start buying kratom in smaller batches.
Care for Kratom
There is a shelf life for kratom, just like anything else that grows naturally. Retailers will only get the most out of their wholesale purchases if they keep it fresh.
