Know Your Greens: A Guide to the Various Types of Green Vein Kratom

Once a well-kept secret in Southeast Asia, kratom has exploded into the global market over the past decade or so. Kratom has even caught researchers’ attention.

Yet, most people don’t know the first thing about kratom. For example, did you know there’s a difference between red, white, and green kratom?

If not, you’ve come to the right place because today we’re talking about all things green kratom.

Kratom Strains 101

Kratom comes from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. This tree is part of the Rubiaceae family.

Depending on where it’s grown and the conditions it grows in, a Mitragyna tree can produce one of three different leaves: red vein, white vein, or green vein. The drying process the leaves undergo after harvest also influences the final strain.

Here’s what you need to know about each of the three most popular strains of kratom.

Red Vein Kratom

The majority of the kratom sold on the market today is made of red vein strains. Why? Because Mitragyna speciosa trees with red-veined leaves are far more common in Southeast Asia than their green and white counterparts.

Plus, this strain is in high-demand for its robust alkaloid content.

You can tell a red kratom leaf by its reddish veins. Common red vein kratom varieties include Red Thai, Borneo Red, Pontianak Red Horn, and Red Sumatra kratom.

White Vein Kratom

White vein kratom leaves tend to have middling levels of alkaloid content.

As with red vein kratom, you can tell you’re dealing with a white vein kratom leaf if it has a paler stem and veins. White vein kratom also undergoes different processing methods, with higher levels of sunlight after drying indoors.

If you want to try white vein kratom, check out popular strains like White Sumatra and Borneo White.

Green Vein Kratom

Green vein lead Mitragyna speciosa trees produce the lowest levels of alkaloids out of any other kratom variety. That’s why you’ll often find green kratom blended with white or red strains.

Green kratom strains have easily-recognizable green veins and stems. Unlike white kratom, it goes through a drying process with minimal exposure to sunlight. This keeps the leaves, stems, and veins a vibrant green color.

The Top Green Kratom Varieties

Green kratom varieties may be lower in alkaloids, but it has high flavonoid contents. However, some green strains have higher alkaloid concentrations than others. For this reason, you can find varieties of varying potencies.

Here are the top six green vein kratom varieties you need to know about.

Green Bali

Green Bali is one of the most popular green vein kratom varieties on the market. Don’t let this variety’s name fool you, though: it’s not actually from Bali. Green Bali kratom is actually grown in the Bunut region of Brunei, which shares a southern border with Malaysia.

Harvesters won’t pick Green Bali leaves from the Mitragyna speciosa tree until alkaloids reach an optimal level. That’s why Green Bali is one of the purest forms of green kratom. Many products contain 100% green vein leaves.

Green Borneo

Another popular variety, Green Borneo kratom has a higher alkaloid content than Green Bali. Green Borneo comes from the third-largest island in the world: Borneo. Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia are three distinct countries contained on the island of Borneo.

Like Green Bali kratom, Green Borneo leaves ripen on the tree until alkaloid contents reach their peak. Most harvesters won’t collect leaves unless the tree is fully mature.

Green Sunda

Indonesia’s Sunda Island produces all of the world’s Green Sunda kratom. Similar to everyone’s favorite Green Bali kratom, this type is 100% pure. That means it doesn’t come with any white or red kratom strains mixed in.

Green Sunda varieties are often considered an excellent alternative to Green Bali.

Green Malay

Despite its name, this variety actually originates from Indonesia’s Bengkulu region. Most Green Malay varieties come from the city of Nibelung.

This green vein kratom variety goes through a unique drying process. Harvesters remove the green stems from the leaves before drying. That way, none of the alkaloid content gets lost.

Green Maeng Da

You can find Green Maeng Da kratom in the Bunut region of Indonesia.

Here’s something you may not know about Green Maeng Da: it’s not actually 100% green vein kratom. Green Maeng Da is made up of 80% green vein kratom plus 20% white vein kratom.

Where to Find High-Quality Green Vein Kratom

Green kratom, red kratom, and white kratom are three different strains of the Mitragyna speciosa tree. They’re differentiated based on the color of the leaves’ veins and stems.
