Kanna vs Kratom: What’s the Difference?

Did you know people have been using kratom for over 150 years? Well, stand aside, kratom, there’s a new botanical out there named kanna, which has been around for just as long, if not longer.

Just kidding: kratom and kanna are both great botanicals in different ways. You may be familiar with kratom but not kanna or vice versa.

Luckily, you can learn the difference between kanna vs kratom in this article.

What is Kanna?

Unlike kratom, whose home is in Southeast Asia, kanna is native to South Africa. Kanna is originally from the Sceletium tortuosum succulent plant.

When you dry the flowers from the succulent, it becomes kanna powder. When you extract the alkaloids from the plant, then you have kanna extract.

The so-called founder of Cape Town, South Africa has written accounts of kanna usage from local communities before colonization. The Khoikhoi and the San people cultivated kanna frequently for different reasons.

How is Kanna Different from Kratom?

There are many ways kanna and kratom are not similar, so it’s time to learn the differences between kratom and kanna.

As mentioned previously, kratom originates from Southeast Asia, but the plant it is extracted from is not a succulent but rather a tree. When you crush the Mitragyna speciosa tree leaves, you get kratom in powder form, and extracting alkaloids from the plant leads to kratom extract.

Kanna and kratom have similar forms despite coming from different plants: a powder and an extract form.

Both kratom and kanna have yet to be evaluated by the FDA, so the following are only proposed and possible benefits from using either. Kanna can help relax you or can help stave off your appetite if you’re trying to diet. Be careful, though, because in higher doses it may lead to mild hallucinations since it is a psychoactive compound.

Kratom, on the other hand, comes in a few different strains, all of which have different effects. You may find the most stimulation from white kratom, but red kratom could promote relaxation. Then, green kratom is milder than those two and offers different effects.

Both may promote relaxation, but kanna may in particular help keep depression and anxiety at bay.

Kanna vs Kratom Pros and Cons

There are different pros and cons to using kanna vs kratom but just remember: you would seek out each for different things.

Kanna can help boost your serotonin levels, but kratom binds to opioid receptors. Even with these small differences, they both can have similar good effects, such as promoting euphoria, helping to stave off insomnia, and more.

Some cons of both include side effects. Kanna may give you diarrhea and headaches. On the other hand, kratom may constipate and dehydrate you, as well as give you migraines.
